This 400 size reel is a powerhouse, the Okuma Komodo SS is built to withstand extreme conditions and big fish. ย The main gear is stainless steel rather than brass and is 54mm which is massiveย for a 400 size reel. ย The Shimano Tranx is only 50mm and it’s a much larger reel. ย Even though it has a ton of power, it still is available in a 7:1 ratio which brings in 38″ per crank. ย This reel would be ideal for poppers, irons, and hard baits like the Rapala Xrap Long Cast.
It features 3 carbon fiber lightly greased drag washers and boasts 30 lbs of drag! ย Okuma uses synthetic drag grease on all gears and also on the bearing seat for the main shaft to prevent corrosion. ย At only 16 oz it is significantly less than it’s similar counterparts and the spool holds 250 yards of 65 pound Power Pro. ย Unlike many similar reels, the Komodo SS offers a clicker which is great for slow trolling or seabass fishing at the islands. ย
Unlike the Daiwa Lexa 400, it uses a centrifugal brake system by moving small pins in our out to control the cast. ย It’s also lower to the rod and shorter than the Lexa which reduces the weight and feels better in the palm of your hand. ย The level wind does not disengage so when fighting a big fish the line doesn’t have to pull at extreme angles. ย One simple screw and a twist of the side plate reveals the braking system. ย The 120mm handle is comfortable and easy to grip but not cumbersome. ย
If you’re looking for a powerful compact reel for big fish, this little gem with show you some shugga. ย Put it to the test and let us know what you think.
