The aluminum spool has an anti corrosion coating and allows for increased drag pressure without twisting or binding of the spool gears.  When using braided line or spectra line, make sure you put finger tape or electrical tape on the spool.  If there is no tape on the spool, the braided line will rotate on the spool and won’t allow you to use the drag.  The tape prevents the line from turning on the spool.
